The Holy City of Santiago de Compostela

By Davis Wilson at 2012-11-21 00:03:16
The city of Santiago de Compostela is one of the holy cities which Catholic pilgrims would visit every year besides Jerusalem and Rome. Santiago enjoys thousands of pilgrims on an absolution pilgrimage. It is the same path which the apostle Saint James took as part of his missionary route after Jesus’ crucifixion.

Revered figure

The apostle Saint James or locally known as “Santiago” was a disciple of Jesus who was later beheaded in Jerusalem. The other disciples of Jesus brought his remains back to Galicia for burial after exhuming and authenticating his bones in 813 before placing them in the city Cathedral as ordered by the king of that time, King Alphonso II. Hence, many flock to Santiago de Compostela every year to pay their respects to the revered saint.

Pilgrimage routes

There are many routes to choose from for participating in the St. James pilgrimage. The French route is mainly for the French who comes in through the Pyrenees while the route from the North goes through Spain’s Basque country. There is also the famous Silver route that goes through the south where Andalusia is situated. The Portuguese pilgrims would come by the route through Oporto and Tui; a Galician city. Last but not least, the Maritime route runs through Europe’s north passing by A Coruna or Ferrol; this is called the English way.

Pilgrims are expected to walk a lot with any of these pilgrimage paths. The St. James Pilgrimage Way has been identified as a predecessor to the famous Appalachian Trail. One strives to achieve absolution with the completion of the pilgrimage. However, pilgrims need to walk the last 100 kilometers to be qualified. The rest of the way can be undertaken by horse or bicycle; a boat ride is also acceptable for forty nautical miles with the rest on foot to Pontecesures port.

Pilgrimage fulfillment

The pilgrimage ends at the city of Santiago followed by a ritual entry into the cathedral. Pilgrims are to touch a marble pillar as well as bump their head lightly against a sculptured figure before facing St. James’ image and embrace it from behind. The pilgrim proceeds to the crypt to view the saint’s remains in a silver box before collecting their Latin La Compostela certificate at the Pilgrimage Office.

The first ten pilgrims who receive the La Compostela certificate will be entitled to 3 free meals at Reis Católicos hostel located at Praza do Obradoiro. About 600 pilgrims are received at Santiago per day. The crowd peaks on July 25 which is St. James Day.
